A Small Business for Small Businesses

Hi, my name is Isaac. I am the sole trader here at Wavelength Tech. I have a passion for helping small businesses flourish by keeping their technology in tip-top shape, so they can go on with their important work and passions of their own.

My mother was a small business owner for much of my childhood and early teens (now she’s a somewhat large business owner) - and I got to see the effect her work had on others. Namely, doing what she loved, helping others immensely along the way, and making some extra cash for the family while doing it. I remember saying as a kid, “I’d love to start a business one day, but what would I do?” I always had a love for technology which began earlier than I can remember. My mother was a graphic designer in the 90s’ (yeah, they had those back then) - so she owned a monstrous tower PC that was also our family home computer. As early as 5 years old I remember peering back at the cable spaghetti at the back of the system and wondering what each one of the dusty, colourful cables did.

As I grew up - I came upon something many young people come upon. And might I add, something that sparks an interest in computers & technology for many. Gaming. My dad came home one day with a PS2 - I still remember him walking up the steps with it under his arm and wondering what present he had brought home today. Little did I know it would start something that would have flow-on effects for the rest of my life.

Believe me, I am not trying to glorify gaming as a perfect hobby. I’m really not. Gaming addiction is a real thing - and something I definitely had to battle in my mid-late teens. That being said, my love for computers really began in the late 2000’s & early 2010’s because of video games. Remember that old tower PC I mentioned? My brother and dad would play old Rainbow Six games on there even prior to the PS2 - then not long after, my family bought a laptop for the first time. We would play old combat and strategy games, then my sister and I got into online MMO’s like Animal Jam and Tanki Online.

Fast forward not long at all - and oh no. I discovered the game that took over my life. Minecraft. Those of you from my generation probably remember where you were, what device you were playing on and what you built during your first ever time playing Minecraft. The utter excitement of the idea that there is a game where you can build anything, do anything, travel anywhere etc.

I played around with consoles for a number of years, until 2016 - when I finally committed to buying my own PC with pocket money I had earned working at a local grocery store. On leap day, 2016, I unboxed my first prebuilt PC from eBay. Cheap parts, lower-mid range at the time but it was my pride and joy.

14-year-old me with my new PC.

She was a beauty. A8 7650K Processor and (get this) a Radeon R7 260X. I remember thinking I paid sooo much extra for this card. By memory, the system was about $800 total.

By the next year, I was ready to build my own. I again began to put every bit of my pocket money together for computer parts, as well as a bit of YouTube revenue from some old videos I made - and I was ready to embark on an adventure - my first PC build. I scoured Linus Tech Tips and other YouTubers for tips and tutorials on PC building and tech, took my $1600 of savings, and in August of 2017, build this system right here:

My first build - $1600 in 2017. Ryzen 5 1600, RX 480.

You know that feeling of finishing something off that you put your heart & soul into, stepping back, and watching it glow? Yeah, well, that was me. Literally. Like, check out the RBG on that bad boy. For PC people, finishing a build and pressing the power button makes these moments even more suspenseful — waiting to see if the system will boot or you’ll be left with a black screen, or no signs of life at all!

Anyway - I did happen to film myself building this sucker (and actually gave it to my IDMT teacher for a work submission back in the day - good times.) Here’s the YouTube link. (Warning - may contain traces of cringe)

From there, my love for computers and technology grew and grew. I graduated high school, sent my Cert II in IDMT into a local school and got a full time job in IT and Administration. I’ve been blessed to work there since (2020-2024), moving down to part time as of this year to balance work at Wavelength.

Circling back to the beginning - I found my interest (and a potential skill and career) at an early age, and also learned the impacts small business have on individuals, communities and the world by my mother, Jo Whitton. Every small business needs tech support (even the super duper tech savvy business owners - heck, even I need it sometimes). That’s where I come in! I am set on providing flexible, personable, affordable and effective tech support solutions for anyone trying to get on with the ins and outs of their small business without worrying about their precious tech tools that they have come to rely on so heavily failing them.

As of today. I’ve been living in Brisbane for 7 months, and have had some of the best memories of my life here already. Wavelength Tech has given me an awesome outlet to reach out to the community in a productive way, while not having to deal with the 9-5 day-to-day commute into the city in (or so I’ve heard) the worst traffic in Australia. Yikes.

If you’ve made it to the end - thanks for reading! I plan on writing stories, tech tips, thoughts, ideas and much more here in the blog section. It also gives me an opportunity to show to my clients the types of things they can be doing on their websites!

P.S. — 0% of this blog post was written using AI. Hah, take it or leave it. (Please take it, would I lie to you? NO!)

Isaac, Wavelength Tech.
